Kubu Queen
As you fly or drive into Shakawe on the panhandle of the Okavango Delta in North-Western Botswana, you will be met by Greg, your fishing guide for your entire stay, who will settle you in, show you around the boat and offer you a drink before the Kubu Queen pulls away from its moor and heads onto the open waters of the Okavango.

The houseboat is moored at a different location each night, and whilst dinner is being prepared in the on-board kitchen, a drink can be enjoyed around the fire of whichever location you happen to be at, before heading back on to the boat’s dining deck to enjoy a sumptuous three course meal under the stars, regaling stories of the day’s catches.

Two tender boats accompany the Kubu Queen and these are used to explore the channels and lagoons in the area, looking for the best fishing spots. One of the world's finest freshwater fighting fish inhabits these waters and guests have the opportunity to go out on the tender boats to try their hand at hooking in the mighty Tiger Fish. Nature Walks can also be conducted on some of the larger islands found along the river.

The Okavango River's crystal clear waters are home to a variety of fish as well as crocodiles, hippopotamus and otters. They also support an abundance of bird life. Several species of bird are rare and endemic to the area. Guests to the area also have the chance to glimpse a sighting of the rare and elusive Sitatunga antelope.

A maximum of 6 guests can be accommodated on board and up to 12 guests can be taken incorporating accommodation in bedded tents on islands (safari style). The onboard accommodation includes 2 Cabins with double beds, and on the upper deck, there is an open-air bedroom with 2 single beds (mosquito nets provided). There are separate toilet and basin, as well as a shower room, all done in classic style. On the upper deck there is a comfortable lounge area and bar as well as dining deck.

This is a memorable trip to do, with arguably Botswana’s most highly trained fishing guide, accompanied by a staff of well trained chefs and camp-hands. Not one to be missed!

Private Guides

Rob was born in the southern highlands of Tanzania and was introduced to the bush at a young age. His first stomping grounds were in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania, where the family would regularly go camping. After finishing school, Rob went on to work in Ruaha guiding for a season at a lodge with family friends. This is where he knew that a life of guiding and working in the bush was unquestionably the one for him. Rob studied in Bristol, UK and graduated with a BA(Hons) but the bush was always calling. Before leaving the UK for good and returning to his roots, Rob was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS).

He came to Botswana and was immediately taken by the incredible wilderness and diversity of the country and soon realised that this was to be his new home. He went on to start up Golden Okavango, and today, as Director of the company and a fully licensed professional guide of Botswana, he continues to work throughout the country, in the Okavango, Chobe and Kalahari, leading safaris for many repeat clients who keep coming back for more. He also has some pretty bad jokes that’ll make you groan, so don’t encourage him too much!
