A brand new active and adventurous safari ideal for the more intrepid safari-goer, including a day trek on Mount Kenya, walking and cycling in Hell's Gate National Park, and a horseback safari in the Aberdares. Perfect for seeing Kenya up-close.
MEAL PLAN → Breakfast, lunch and dinner from Day 3 until lunch on Day 10. ACCOMMODATION → Three and four star lodges/camps are used. On occasion alternatives may be used due to local availability/road conditions.
TRAVEL TIPS → Be sure to pack a mixture of light and warm clothing in soft bags, maximum 15kgs, plus sunglasses, camera, binoculars. Walking boots, water bottle, waterproof jacket and a rucksack are also advised for the Mount Kenya trek.
GROUP SIZE → Minimum 4, maximum 6 passengers.
NB → Minimum age 12 years and reasonable fitness required.
4x4 SAFARI
An English speaking driver/guide escorts you throughout in a 4x4 with maximum 6 people, all with a window seat/standing space when game viewing. Upgrade to a private vehicle for 2 people for a supplement of £450 per person.
Your itinerary
DAY 1 → Kenya Airways overnight flight from Heathrow to Nairobi.
DAY 2 → On arrival transfer to the Holiday Inn for the afternoon and overnight.
DAY 3 → After breakfast, the adventure begins with a 2-3 hour drive to the base of Mount Kenya and the Naro Moru River Lodge. Set in picturesque mountain air and scenery, a warm atmosphere and wide range of activities awaits. After lunch, enjoy a cultural safari of the local villages and farmlands, returning to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
DAY 4 → After a morning acclimatising, depart by road to the head of the Naro Moru Track at 3,000m. Your Guide sets a leisurely pace for a relaxing trek up part of the mountain, stopping en route for a picnic lunch before reaching the crest of the ridge at 4,000m and its amazing views. A quick descent follows to the met station and back to the lodge in time for dinner.
DAY 5 → Today drive to Sangare Ranch near the Aberdares National Park for lunch. Set in an exquisite 6500 acre private ranch overlooking a beautiful lake, Sangare hosts elephants, buffalos, zebras, giraffes, antelopes, and leopards. In the afternoon take a magical 2 hour horseback safari, enjoying the wildlife and local flora and fauna. A special barbeque dinner follows in the famous Mau Mau caves, an incredibly unique experience. Overnight at the ranch.
DAY 6 → Drive to Thomson's Falls for a brief photo-stop, continuing to Lake Nakuru arriving in time for lunch followed by an afternoon game drive in the park - the perfect place to view the flamingos, monkeys and rhinos. Stop at Baboon cliff for a panoramic view, continuing to Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge for dinner and overnight.
DAY 7 → Visit Hell's Gate National Park today, famous for its hot natural geysers, spectacular gorges, and one of the few Kenyan parks where walking and cycling is allowed. View extinct volcanoes and enjoy a walking safari, seeing the wildlife which includes buffalo, giraffe, and antelopes. Return to Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge for the night.
DAY 8 → An early start for the drive to the Maasai Mara, arriving in time for lunch. An afternoon game drive follows in this most magnificent natural theatre. At the end of the day enjoy sundowners, dinner and overnight at Kilima Camp, a luxurious tented camp in the northern Mara. Dinner is under canvas or under the stars, then relax by the campfire or at the bush bar, listening to the magical sounds of the African bush.
DAY 9 → A wonderfully varied day in the Mara today, with a game drive in the morning, lunch in camp, then a nature walk including a visit to a local Maasai village, the Mara river and a hippo pool. Dinner and overnight at Kilima camp.
DAY 10 → After breakfast, exit the Maasai Mara, game viewing en route with a picnic lunch stop. Return to Nairobi in time for a wonderful dinner at Carnivore's restaurant, then return to the airport for your Kenya Airways overnight flight to Heathrow.
